Earlier this month, the South Carolina Sister Society of the Global Women's Leadership Network (GWLN) officially debuted, marking the network's growth to more than 160 Sister Societies across six continents. Nearly 60 credit union women and their allies gathered in the Upstate at Spero Financial's headquarters on August 8, 2024, for the launch party, which featured pink champagne, delectable bites, and thought-provoking conversation.

Most notably, the newly established South Carolina Sister Society uplifted the Julie Valentine Center by donating a $4,000 check from the proceeds of the launch party.

GWLN is part of the Worldwide Foundation For Credit Unions (WFCU), the World Council of Credit Unions' (WOCCU) philanthropic arm. It is committed to advancing women's opportunities and creating positive change. As part of this network, state-specific sister societies allow members and prospective members to engage in various activities and initiatives to promote development and networking for women. GWLN provides a platform for women to share experiences and exchange ideas that empower personal and professional growth. WOCCU represents more than 80 national and regional credit union associations that serve more than 400 million members through some 80,000 credit unions in nearly 100 countries.

"The South Carolina Sister Society is proud to join this global movement and to highlight the voices and contributions of women leaders in South Carolina," remarked co-leader Jessica Baker of Spero Financial in her kickoff and introduction. "GWLN is dedicated to providing women with the opportunity and resources to make a measurable difference in the lives of each other, credit union members, and their communities." 

The event's keynote speaker was Julie Valentine Center's CEO, Shauna Galloway-Williams, who shared personal and powerful stories of harassment and challenged each of the attendees to listen to their gut, stand up against unwelcomed behavior in the workplace, and be an ally for those facing tough situations. By shedding light on the challenges and the progress in addressing sexual harassment, women can be empowered to create a better environment for future generations.

The Julie Valentine Center is a non-profit organization that provides free, confidential services for child abuse and sexual assault victims in Greenville and beyond. The organization's mission is to stop sexual violence and child abuse and the impact of these crimes through prevention, investigation, collaboration, treatment, and advocacy.

The Julie Valentine Center was presented with a check, underscoring the commitment of the South Carolina Sister Society to drive positive change in the community. Proceeds from sponsorships, registration fees, and donations, less the event's expenses, were matched by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation resulting in an impressive $4,000 raised!
