3 Cs to Develop a Winning Credit Union Team

Michael Wolsten, CEO, Michael Wolsten Consulting

One of the most pressing questions for credit union leaders is how to develop and nurture top-tier talent.

Let's be honest; in today's competitive labor market, finding individuals who perfectly align with your credit union’s needs can seem like a daunting task.

This is where the 3 Cs framework I’ve developed comes into play.

Focusing on Commitment, Capability, and Coachability will allow you to refine your development process and effectively coach your existing team to continuous growth.

The 3 Cs:

1. Commitment:

Success hinges on a high level of commitment. Consider these points:

  • How have they demonstrated commitment in their previous roles?

  • Do their stated values align with their actions?

  • Are they inclined to go the extra mile?

  • Does your mission resonate with them?

2. Capability:

Evaluate their skills and abilities:

  • What does their past experience reveal about their capabilities?

  • How quickly have they mastered skills in the past?

  • What strengths and talents make them a good long-term fit for your credit union?

3. Coachability:

The willingness to learn and adapt is crucial. Look for these indicators:

  • How do they discuss past work experiences or leadership?

  • Are they receptive to feedback?

  • Can they demonstrate personal growth following constructive criticism?

  • Do they take ownership of mistakes, or do they tend to blame external factors?

Once you start coaching to the 3Cs, you will find yourself getting to the root of many issues much more quickly, which will help you help your team accelerate their growth.

You will also become more skilled at consistently and organically selecting the right people for your organization and developing more top performers.

There are so many benefits. In fact, one credit union client walked through this process with their team recently and saw sales jump more than 40% in less than three months!

By leveraging the 3 Cs, asking the right questions, and providing the right training, you can confidently retain and develop top talent within your organization for years to come.
