Georgia United Credit Union promotes Janis Johnson to Chief Risk Officer/General Counsel

Brought on board in September 2023 as Georgia United Credit Union’s first-ever in-house attorney, Janis Johnson has been promoted to chief risk officer/general counsel overseeing all aspects of the credit union’s legal functions, risk management, compliance and board governance.

“In her new role, Janis will provide us with a holistic view of risk, including legal, regulatory, compliance and other operational aspects,” said Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer Bob Bogart. “She is poised to navigate and safeguard our company through dynamic legal landscapes with precision and insight.”

Prior to joining Georgia United, Johnson was senior vice president, deputy general counsel and corporate secretary for Amalgamated Bank, based in New York and Charlote, N.C. She also has a background in employment law and served as associate general counsel at Truist Bank and Bank of America.

“Janis has the risk management expertise and valuable insights to help Georgia United mitigate risk faced by the organization with the changing landscape of the financial industry,” said Bogart. “We believe this perspective is valuable and her deep understanding of risk management principles along with executive-level exposure to business operations, board governance, contracts and negotiations makes her an ideal fit for the CRO role.”
