Illinois Advocates Enjoy Successful Hike the Hill Day

The Illinois Credit Union League (ICUL) hosted a productive Hike the Hill event on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. The advocacy efforts of the League/CUNA system play a vital role in the democratic process to create a unified voice on behalf of credit unions in the United States.

Eighteen Illinois credit union advocates participated in ICUL’s event. Participants included two volunteer board members as well as credit union management officials representing multiple communities throughout Illinois. The diverse group of attendees included professionals from credit unions ranging in asset size from $750,000 to over $7 billion. ICUL leadership officials were pleased to be among the group.

Highlights from ICUL’s Hike the Hill event included:

  • NCUA briefings with Vice Chair Kyle Hauptman and Director of Examination and Insurance Kelly Lay

  • Advocacy updates from CUNA’s Richard Gose, Jason Stverak, and Madison Rose

  • Visits with members and staff of the Illinois Congressional delegation

As the focal points of the Congressional visits, ICUL discussed our strong opposition to proposed interchange legislation and support for the Veterans MBL legislation. Tom Kane, ICUL President/CEO, shared “Hike the Hill provided a tremendous opportunity for credit unions to participate in our federal regulatory and legislative advocacy efforts. Events like HTH let us tell our positive credit union story and help foster long-term, impactful relationships with key policymakers.”
