Keeping the MSU Community in our Hearts & Minds

On Monday, February 13, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union was operating as it usually does. Below is a Facebook post from earlier in the day emblazoned with images of community support. Then Monday night …

…three students were shot dead on the MSU campus Monday night; five more are in critical condition. The alleged gunman turned the gun on himself, according to news reports. No one knows why.

Why is the most important question we can ever ask, not because it might change what’s happened but because it could answer questions that change the future.

Could more community or mental health support have prevented the senseless violence?

Could improved economic opportunities have prevented this tragedy?

I didn’t reach out to MSU FCU; they have enough on their plate. However, the next day, MSU FCU CEO April Clobes posted this message to her LinkedIn account:

“Thank you to all those that have reached out to check on our MSUFCU family. Our hearts are heavy and grieving with the Spartan community. We are working to support our employees and our friends and partners at MSU as they focus on student, faculty and staff needs. Our thoughts and embrace go out to those affected by this tragedy as well as the entire Spartan community.”

The credit union’s Facebook and other social media pages displayed posts like the one below.

As always, catastrophic events like this leave more questions than answers. It also brings forth a renewed sense of community, hopefully even stronger than before. MSU FCU is doing what it can to support its community right now in its time of need. Credit unions across the country are reaching out in support of their fellow-credit union. I don’t know what more to say other than I am thinking of the families and friends of the victims and the MSU community. Stay Spartan Strong.
