Spero Financial Receives First Place Recognition for Community Outreach and Financial Wellness Efforts

Spero Financial has been recognized by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation as the first-place recipient of two distinguished awards for the Credit Union’s community outreach and financial wellness efforts.

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award was awarded to Spero Financial for their involvement in community outreach, specifically its efforts in hosting the Pink Walk. This event brings together communities across the Upstate of South Carolina to increase awareness for all types of cancers, honor those who have battled cancer, and raise funds to fight cancers affecting women. Further, this recognition includes Spero’s involvement with AnMed’s Mobile Mammography Bus— a service providing women with convenient access to low or no-cost mammogram screening. The 2025 Pink Walk is scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 1, 2025. More details coming soon.

The Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Award was awarded to Spero for its efforts in incorporating the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” into daily operations. Through Spero’s financial wellness program, members and others in the community have access to free financial tools, such as one-on-one financial coaching, self-paced online financial resources, and community financial workshops.

In response to these recognitions, Spero’s President and CEO Brian McKay, shared, “We are honored to be recognized by the Foundation in receiving these awards. I say it often – our people and our culture are what make Spero special. These recognitions are a testament to Team Spero’s hard work and unwavering dedication to improve the financial lives of our members and communities. I couldn’t be prouder.”

These awards, along with an additional award named the Alphonse Desjardins Youth and Adult Financial Education Award, were created by the Credit Union National Association, now America’s Credit Unions, to recognize credit unions for their efforts to support communities, provide financial education, and implement the credit union philosophy. While recognizing credit unions, these awards also honor three credit union pioneers who made a lasting impact on the credit union movement.

Nominations are received annually with a committee review to select winners. The credit unions recognized for these awards are honored at the Foundation’s Awards Gala to be held during the Carolinas Credit Union League’s LAUNCH Conference in February 2025.
