UMassFive Helps Award $4,000 in Scholarships

UMassFive College Federal Credit Union (UMassFive) is excited to announce that two high school seniors, Clarice Borges and Miguel Pinero-Jacome, were each awarded a $2,000 scholarship on behalf of the Credit Union by the Massachusetts Pioneer Valley Chapter of Credit Unions. Applicants receive scholarships based on academic achievements, community involvement, and a written essay. Both awardees had the highest level of academic achievement of all applicants.

Clarice Borges, a Dexter Southfield School graduate, was a council representative and the senior captain of the varsity basketball team. Basketball was a major extracurricular focus for Clarice, including playing for the Brazilian national team, acting as a counselor at Hoop Academy basketball camp, and volunteering for Projeto Adrianinha Basketball by giving sports lectures, organizing practices, and raising money to assist kids of low socioeconomic status in her hometown of Recife, BR. Clarice also worked as a research trainee at Brigham Women’s Hospital Endocrinology Department. She plans to study Bioengineering at MIT this fall.

Miguel Pinero-Jacome, a recent Amherst-Regional High School graduate, was student council vice president, and a student representative on the Amherst-Regional School Committee. His extracurricular activities included varsity track, French club, Schools for Africa club, database management and web development intern at Skills Library, ESL communication partner, SAT Math tutoring, Spanish tutoring, and volunteer track coaching. Miguel plans to study Computer Science at Princeton University in the fall.

We are so proud of Clarice, Miguel, and the other impressive 32 local high school seniors who submitted their applications for consideration.
