Telhio Credit Union and Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski are teaming up to give shelter dogs across central Ohio a shot at the life they deserve.
The partnership centers around Hockey & Hounds, a weekly radio segment on The Fan 97.1 FM that does exactly what it sounds like—talks hockey and showcases adoptable pups. In 2026 alone, Telhio donated $7,280 to the cause. But here’s where it gets even better: Werenski stepped up and matched that donation dollar for dollar.
When Sports Radio Meets Animal Rescue
The segment, which airs during the Rothman & Ice show throughout the Blue Jackets regular season, was created by 97.1 FM sports radio personality Anthony Rothman. It’s a simple but brilliant concept: give listeners insider access to CBJ players like Werenski and Damon Severson while shining a spotlight on dogs waiting at local shelters and rescues.
The results speak for themselves. This season, 17 dogs featured on the show found their forever homes. That’s 17 wagging tails that might still be waiting behind chain-link fences if not for a radio segment about hockey.
A Decade of Making a Difference
Telhio’s relationship with The Fan 97.1 FM goes back ten years, and their support for Hockey & Hounds specifically started in 2016. Since then, they’ve poured $74,880 into animal adoption efforts across the region. That’s not pocket change—that’s a serious commitment to helping the community.
“Telhio’s partnership with Hockey & Hounds reflects our commitment to supporting initiatives that make a real difference in our communities,” said Nick Biratsis, Telhio’s Vice President of Marketing, during a recent check presentation. “Helping connect adoptable dogs with families addresses a meaningful need, and we’re proud to work with 97.1 FM and the Columbus Blue Jackets to support that effort.”
Werenski Puts His Money Where His Heart Is
For Werenski, who’s been with the Blue Jackets for a decade, the partnership hits close to home—literally. “Giving back to the community I’ve called home for 10 seasons is important to me, and I’ve enjoyed chatting with Rothman and Ice all season long to raise awareness and funds through the Hockey & Hounds segments,” he said. “Teaming up with Telhio Credit Union, I’m proud to match this year’s funds raised to help make a bigger impact for local dog shelters and the animals that need it most.”
It’s worth noting that Werenski isn’t just writing a check and calling it a day. He’s a regular guest on the segment, using his platform to amplify the message and connect with fans about something that matters beyond the rink.
Beyond the Radio Waves
The impact of Hockey & Hounds extends well beyond the weekly broadcast. The initiative has sparked a wave of community involvement in pet adoptions, volunteering, and charitable giving throughout central Ohio. They even sell their own merchandise line through local sportswear company Where I’m From, with every single dollar from Hockey & Hounds apparel going straight back to animal shelters and rescues in Ohio and Philadelphia.
It’s the kind of grassroots, community-driven effort that reminds you why local partnerships matter. No corporate red tape, no boardroom politics—just people who love their city, their hockey team, and their four-legged friends working together to make things better.
