While some banks are closing branches faster than Blockbuster stores circa 2010, Chartway Credit Union is doing the opposite—and they’re doing it with intention.
This July, Chartway is cutting the ribbon on two brand-new branches: one in Virginia Beach’s Town Center on July 9, and another in Herriman, Utah, on July 21. And if that weren’t enough, they’re also giving two other branches a complete makeover this year.
The timing makes sense. Chartway just hit $3.2 billion in assets with more than 265,000 member-owners across Virginia, Utah, and Texas. That’s not just growth for growth’s sake—it’s a credit union that’s doubling down on the communities it serves.
More Than Just Square Footage
“Growth for Chartway has always been about more than physical expansion,” says Brian Schools, president and CEO. “It’s about showing up for our members and communities in meaningful ways like putting families in homes and cars, creating pathways for young people to thrive financially, and helping small businesses grow.”
Translation? They’re not opening branches just to plant a flag. These locations are part of a multiyear plan to make sure members can access financial services however they want—whether that’s walking into a branch, logging into an app at midnight, or somewhere in between.
Why These Two Locations Matter
The Virginia Beach Town Center spot isn’t random. It’s smack in the middle of one of the region’s busiest business and lifestyle hubs, strengthening Chartway’s footprint in south Hampton Roads where they already have strong roots.
The Herriman branch is actually a homecoming story. Chartway has history there, and they’re returning to a community that’s exploding with growth—and families who need solid financial partners.
“Our history in Herriman runs deep, and we’re proud to return to this community in a bigger and better way than before,” explains Melissa Cade, Chartway’s chief experience officer. “Herriman continues to grow, and so do the needs of the people who call it home.”
Both branches are designed around the member experience—think modern spaces with actual humans who know their stuff, backed by technology that actually works. You know, the way it should be.
Because Not Everyone Banks the Same Way
Here’s the thing: these new branches aren’t Chartway’s only move. They’ve been busy on the digital front too. In early 2026, they rolled out personalized mobile banking with integrated credit score monitoring, subscription management (finally, a way to track all those streaming services you forgot about), bilingual digital banking, new credit cards, and financial tools specifically designed for kids and teens.
The strategy is refreshingly simple: meet people where they are. Some folks want to walk into a branch. Others never want to leave their couch. Chartway is building for both.
