CU Spotlight Walks Away With Three Communicator Awards (And Yeah, Disney Was in the Room)

You know you’re doing something right when your work gets stacked up against The Walt Disney Company, PepsiCo, and Marriott International — and you walk away with hardware.

That’s exactly what happened to CU Spotlight at the 32nd Annual Communicator Awards, where they snagged three wins at one of the marketing world’s toughest competitions.

The Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts doesn’t mess around with this thing. It’s one of the biggest stages for creative excellence, and CU Spotlight just earned a standing ovation.

The Hardware Breakdown

Here’s what they brought home:

  • Award of Excellence for CU Reforestation in the General Feature Article category
  • Award of Distinction for “Life Over Debt: A Financial Journey for Cancer Survivors” in Individual Podcast Episodes – Finance
  • Award of Distinction for “Life Over Debt: Bringing Awareness to Cancer Debt” in Individual Podcast Episodes – Causes and Awareness

Why This Matters (Spoiler: It’s Not Just About Trophies)

“The credit union space is full of stories that never get told — and that’s exactly why we built this platform,” said Shirley Senn, co-founder of CU Spotlight. “To see CU Reforestation recognized at this level just confirms we’re on the right track.”

And she’s right. Credit unions do incredible work in communities every single day, but those stories often get buried under the noise. CU Spotlight exists to change that — and these awards prove people are paying attention.

The Life Over Debt Series: When Storytelling Meets Real Impact

The Life Over Debt podcast series deserves its own spotlight (pun absolutely intended). Co-hosted by Jonathan Taylor, the series dives into something most people don’t talk about enough: the crushing financial burden that follows cancer survivors long after their last treatment.

Founded by Andy Janning, the Life Over Debt Initiative tackles cancer debt head-on. The podcast was recorded live at the Governmental Affairs Conference 1934 Reception, with support from sponsors including Empathy, Tennessee and Mississippi Credit Union Association, Enbright Credit Union, and BankSocial.

“When Andy Janning told us about the Life Over Debt Initiative, it was a no-brainer — we had to tell this story,” Taylor explained. “Cancer debt is real, it’s heavy, and it follows people long after treatment ends. We’re just grateful Andy and these survivors trusted us with something so personal.”

Behind the Scenes Magic

Phil Senn, co-founder of CU Spotlight, gave a shout-out to the less glamorous (but equally essential) work that makes great content possible.

“People see the finished product, but there’s a whole lot that has to come together before anyone hits record,” he said. “I love that part of it — the setup, the connections, making sure everything’s in place so the team can do what they do best. Seeing it all pay off like this is pretty special.”

Who Was Judging This Thing?

The Communicator Awards jury wasn’t exactly a panel of pushovers. Think professionals from JPMorgan Chase & Co., FedEx, Netflix, the NAACP, and over 1,100 other industry leaders from the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts. These folks know good work when they see it.
