Here’s hoping nobody at Gerber Federal Credit Union ever needs to use their newly acquired superpowers.

The credit union recently put its entire team through on-site CPR, First Aid, and AED certification training—the kind of skills you pray you’ll never need but are incredibly grateful to have when the moment arrives. Think of it as their Spider-Man origin story, minus the radioactive spider.
But Gerber FCU didn’t stop at training. They’ve also installed Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at every single branch location. That’s the medical equipment that can literally restart a heart when someone goes into cardiac arrest. Combined with staff who now know exactly how to use them, that’s a serious safety upgrade.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
“At Gerber FCU, we care deeply about the people we serve and the colleagues who help us fulfill our mission every day,” said John Buckley, President/CEO. “By investing in CPR, First Aid and AED training, along with placing AEDs in all of our branch locations, we’re taking proactive steps to create a safer environment and help ensure we’re prepared to respond when every second counts.”
And he’s not exaggerating about the “every second counts” part. When someone experiences cardiac arrest, their survival chances drop by roughly 10% with each passing minute. Having trained responders and the right equipment nearby can literally mean the difference between life and death.
What The Training Covered
Certified Trainer Mark Wyn led the sessions, covering everything from the basics to the “please let this never happen” scenarios. The curriculum incorporated the latest emergency response science and best practices, teaching the team how to handle:
- Burns and cuts (the everyday stuff)
- Sudden illnesses that come out of nowhere
- Head, neck, and back injuries
- Heat- and cold-related emergencies
- Breathing and cardiac events in both adults and children
- Proper CPR techniques and AED operation
It’s comprehensive training that goes way beyond slapping a bandage on a paper cut.
