California Students Just Scored Nearly $500K in Scholarships — And They’re Already Changing Their Communities

A bright, energetic collage showcases college students experiencing everyday campus life in a welcoming university setting. The different scenes show students walking across campus, talking with friends, collaborating around a laptop, studying outdoors, taking notes, and heading toward academic buildings. Backpacks, notebooks, laptops, and coffee reinforce the authentic college atmosphere. The students represent a diverse campus community and are dressed casually with no school, organization, or program branding visible. Tree-lined walkways, green lawns, traditional brick buildings, and modern campus facilities provide the backdrop. The image conveys themes of college access, higher education, student success, campus life, academic opportunity, collaboration, and preparing for the future.

45 California students are heading to college this year with nearly half a million dollars in scholarship money from Golden 1 Credit Union. And these aren’t just kids who crushed their SATs — they’re out there actually making their communities better.

The scholarship recipients represent every stage of college life, from wide-eyed freshmen to almost-done seniors, and they’re spreading out across California colleges and universities. What earned them a spot? A combination of stellar grades, community involvement, leadership chops, work experience, and a genuine commitment to lifting up the people around them. Plot twist: nearly half of this year’s winners are first-generation college students, which makes the achievement even sweeter.

“At Golden 1, we believe that an investment in students is an investment in the future of our communities and California,” explained Erica Taylor, senior vice president of community impact and public relations officer for Golden 1 Credit Union. “Through our Scholarship Program, we’re proud to support students who have demonstrated exceptional resilience, dedication and leadership. These recipients are already making a difference in their communities, and we’re honored to be part of their journey.”

More Than Just Good Test Takers

Golden 1’s Scholarship Program gives financial support to eligible members and their dependents who are pursuing higher education in California. The catch? Recipients need to be working toward their first two- or four-year degree at accredited, nonprofit California schools. Fair enough.

This year’s winners are diving into everything from engineering and healthcare to education, business, public service, and the sciences. But here’s the stat that really jumps out: these 45 students have collectively logged more than 12,000 hours of volunteer service. Yes, you read that right. Twelve thousand hours. They’ve supported causes spanning healthcare, youth mentorship, civic engagement, and cultural preservation — all while keeping their grades up and, you know, being teenagers and young adults.

“What stood out most about this year’s recipients was their commitment to giving back,” Taylor added. “Whether through volunteerism, mentorship, caregiving or community leadership, these students are creating positive change beyond the classroom. We look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the years ahead.”

A Decade of Investing in California’s Future

Since Golden 1 launched its Scholarship Program back in 2013, the credit union has awarded approximately $5.5 million in scholarships to nearly 600 California students. That’s a serious investment in homegrown talent.

The scholarship program is just one piece of Golden 1’s broader mission to improve financial well-being across California. The credit union also supports communities through strategic grants, sponsorships, financial education initiatives, employee volunteering efforts, and various community investments. Because apparently, they believe putting money where your mouth is still matters.
