Alaska’s credit unions just teamed up to deliver a serious financial boost to the organizations actually making a difference in their communities.
We’re talking nearly $2.2 million headed to nonprofits across the state.
The Alaska Credit Union League (ACUL) partnered with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines to pull this off through a matching grant program. Think of it as one of those “I’ll match your donation” challenges, except instead of your uncle at Thanksgiving, it’s a major financial institution stepping up to double the impact.
Where the Money’s Going
The total haul of $2,191,350 is being distributed to 27 organizations doing critical work across Alaska. The recipient list reads like a who’s who of community support, including:
- Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis
- Alaska Business Week
- Alaska Children’s Trust
- Alaska Coalition to Homelessness
- Food Bank of Alaska
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska
- Covenant House AK
- Special Olympics of Alaska
- Armed Services YMCA of Alaska
And that’s just scratching the surface. The full roster also includes Alaska Development Corp., Alaska Healing Hearts, Alzheimer’s Resource of Alaska, Beacon Hill, Cook Inlet Lending Center, Data For Indigenous Justice, Fairbanks Youth Advocates, Family Promise Mat-Su, Frontline Mission, JAHMI, Kids Kupboard, Kodiak Kindness, Literacy Council of Alaska, Reach 907, REACH, Southeast Alaska Independent Living, Southeast Conference, and Valley Performing Arts.
These groups tackle everything from youth programs and military family support to financial literacy and housing assistance. In other words, they’re covering the bases that actually matter to real people.
Why Partnerships Like This Work
This isn’t just a feel-good story about writing checks (though that part’s pretty great). It’s a textbook example of what happens when organizations with aligned missions decide to pool their resources.
“Supporting Alaska communities has always been central to our mission, and this opportunity allowed us to extend that support even further,” said Tim Sullivan, President of ACUL. “Working with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines multiplied our giving and helps local nonprofit organizations continue making a meaningful difference across Alaska.”
Translation: By partnering with FHLB Des Moines and their Member Impact Fund, Alaska’s credit unions essentially doubled their community impact without doubling their budget. That’s smart philanthropy.
The Credit Unions Behind the Effort
ACUL represents ten credit unions scattered throughout Alaska, from the panhandle to the interior. The member organizations include Alaska District Engineers Federal Credit Union, Credit Union 1, Global Federal Credit Union, MAC Federal Credit Union, Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union, Northern Skies Federal Credit Union, NuVision Federal Credit Union, Spirit of Alaska Federal Credit Union, Tongass Federal Credit Union, and True North Federal Credit Union.
Together, these institutions are proving that financial organizations can do more than just manage money—they can actively strengthen the communities they serve. And in a state as geographically challenging and diverse as Alaska, that kind of coordinated support makes a real difference.
