First Alliance Credit Union Closes Every Branch So 79 Employees Can Spend a Day Serving

A business that shuts its doors on a working Monday to send everyone into the community is making a statement about what it thinks the job really is.

On Monday, October 12, First Alliance Credit Union closed all of its branches for its annual volunteer event, All for One Day. A total of 79 employees were to each give two hours, which adds up to 158 hours of service across southern Minnesota.

The work is hands-on and practical. Teams headed to three local organizations: the Women’s Shelter & Support Center, the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester, and Family Service Rochester. Expect raking leaves, cleaning gutters, organizing spaces, and other chores that keep a nonprofit running and free its staff to focus on the people they serve.

For the Boys & Girls Club, the size of the crew matters. “Having a group of 25 First Alliance employees here gives us an opportunity to tackle projects that make a real difference in our outdoor spaces while bringing community partners together around our kids,” said Danielle Thompson, the club’s Director of Resource Development.

Brent Rempe, President & CEO of First Alliance, said the point of closing the branches is to move together. “All for One Day is about more than volunteering; it’s about presence and partnership,” he said. “Closing our branches for one day allows our entire team to show up together, strengthen our community partnerships, and live out the cooperative spirit that has been part of First Alliance since 1932.”

The event is part of CU Kind, a statewide credit union initiative coordinated by the Minnesota Credit Union Network. In 2026, more than 3,500 credit union employees, members, and partners volunteered nearly 6,000 hours with 360 community organizations across Minnesota.

First Alliance has been doing this since 2015, when it began observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day by closing branches and dedicating the day to service. In 2018, the event became All for One Day, a nod to the credit union’s member-first philosophy: ALL we do is FOR every ONE of our members.

Nearly a decade in, the day has become part of how First Alliance shows up for the people it serves.
