An obituary in the Chicago Tribune announced that Garry Michael Moebs of Moebs $ervices passed away peacefully at home on May 15, 2025.

It appears he was working up until the end; the latest research posted to his company’s website was dated May 4. Moebs was an oft-cited expert by the credit union trade press (including this writer) on overdrafts and NSFs, among other things.

Moebs, 78, founded his private economic research firm Moebs $ervices in 1983, according to the obituary. It continues, “His passion was his business, clients, colleagues and family. Mike loved what he did and would often say that ‘he never worked a day in his life.’”

His biography explains that he was “an economist who understands the challenges affecting financial institutions.” He built proprietary services like No Bounce® check management, a patented Debit Scoring® tool and Moebs Pricing Institute.

Visitation is May 24 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lake Forest, Ill., at 9 a.m., and a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the obituary asks people to consider a donation to Mercy Home for Boys & Girls in Chicago.
