They were formally recognized this week at the America’s Credit Unions Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C.

“These four lawmakers were selected as 2025 Federal Lawmakers of the Year because of their consistent leadership, accessibility, and willingness to engage on the issues that matter most to credit unions. Each has demonstrated a strong understanding of the credit union difference—supporting policies that expand financial access, promote responsible innovation, and balance meaningful oversight with relief from unnecessary regulatory burden,” mentioned Samantha A.M. Beeler, President of The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates. “Their commitment to member-owned financial institutions makes an genuine impact across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Virginia, and we are proud to recognize their leadership.”

After being nominated by the Federal Advocacy Policy Committee, the nominations for Terri Sewell, Vern Buchanan, Barry Loudermilk, and Morgan Griffith were unanimously approved by The League’s Board of Directors following discussion of their unrelenting support for credit unions and their legislative priorities.

“Credit unions are essential partners in expanding economic opportunity, strengthening local communities, and ensuring families have access to fair and affordable financial services,” said Congresswoman Terri Sewell, Ranking Member of the Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee. “I am proud to stand with credit unions as they work every day to serve their members, support small businesses, and build a more inclusive economy, and I remain committed to protecting their ability to do so.”

“I’m honored to be recognized as Florida’s Lawmaker of the Year. Florida’s credit unions play a vital role in strengthening our economy, supporting small businesses and helping hardworking families build financial security,” said Congressman Vern Buchanan, Vice Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. “Restoring the American Dream begins with expanding opportunity at the local level. I’ll continue fighting for commonsense, pro-growth policies that promote financial access for Floridians across our state.”

“Credit unions are an integral part of America’s consumer financial network, providing access to affordable financial services for families and small businesses across the nation,” stated Congressman Barry Loudermilk, Vice Chair of the Financial Institutions Subcommittee. “This is why I am committed to reducing unnecessary government regulation, modernizing regulatory agencies, and advancing innovation to ensure these community based financial institutions have the tools and resources needed to serve their customers, while maintaining a strong and secure financial system.”

“I am honored to be recognized as the 2025 Federal Lawmaker of the Year in Virginia. Credit unions play a vital role in expanding financial access and supporting small businesses across the Commonwealth,” said Congressman Morgan Griffith, Vice Chair of the House Rules Committee Member on Energy and Commerce. “I remain committed to working with credit unions to ensure they can continue serving their members effectively, free from unnecessary regulatory burdens, while maintaining strong consumer protections.”

“The Federal Lawmaker of the Year honor recognizes leadership when it matters most,” concluded Ibby Dickson. “Congresswoman Sewell and Congressmen Buchanan, Loudermilk, and Griffith have demonstrated their support for credit unions during pivotal policy debates, standing up for the industry and the members they serve.”

We are grateful to Congresswoman Sewell, Congressman Buchanan, Congressman Loudermilk, and Congressman Griffith, and we appreciate their service on behalf of our members across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and beyond.
