Municipal Credit Union (MCU) just scored a workplace hat trick.
For the third year in a row, the New York Metro’s biggest credit union has landed a spot on the National Association for Business Resources‘ list of New York’s Best & Brightest Companies to Work For®. And no, this isn’t one of those participation-trophy situations—the recognition comes with some pretty impressive receipts.
The Best & Brightest program isn’t just about having a ping-pong table in the break room. An independent research firm puts companies through their paces, evaluating everything from leadership style and strategic planning to wellness programs, professional development opportunities, and work-life balance initiatives. Think of it as a comprehensive health check for workplace culture.
So what’s MCU’s secret sauce? According to CEO Kyle Markland, it starts with walking the walk. “MCU’s mission is rooted in helping hard-working New Yorkers build better tomorrows, and we believe that starts with our employees,” he said. “We are committed to creating a workplace where people feel supported, valued and encouraged to grow.”
Putting Money Where Their Mouth Is
Let’s talk numbers, because MCU is backing up those words with serious investment. In 2026 alone, the credit union has poured $4.8 million into total rewards and benefits for employees. That includes $80,000 dedicated to professional development and more than $35,000 toward wellness and employee appreciation programs.
The learning culture is real, too. Employees have logged 10,671 training hours so far this year—that’s the equivalent of someone spending nearly 15 months straight in continuous learning mode.
But here’s where it gets really interesting: MCU took 60 teller positions and transformed them into Member Service Representative roles. That’s not just a title change—it’s a fundamental shift toward creating actual career paths while moving employees into more consultative, relationship-focused work. Win-win.
More Than Just Talk About Wellness
MCU’s approach to employee health has caught attention beyond New York, too. The credit union earned Cigna’s 2026 Healthy Workforce Gold Designation, an award given to organizations that genuinely prioritize employee health, engagement, and vitality (rather than just talking about it in corporate emails).
And if you needed more proof that employees actually enjoy working there, MCU also earned Great Place to Work® certification in 2025—an honor based largely on employee feedback rather than what leadership claims in a press release.
“This Best & Brightest recognition reflects the significant investments we’ve made year after year in career development, employee well-being and creating pathways for advancement across the organization,” said Toni-Ann Sforza, MCU’s Chief Operating Officer. “We’re committed to building an environment where people can grow meaningful careers.”
In a world where “company culture” often feels like empty buzzwords, MCU seems to be doing the actual work—and getting recognized for it three years running.
