The League of Credit Unions Lands New CEO With Serious Street Cred

Big news in the credit union world: John Bratsakis is stepping up as the new CEO of The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates.

After what sounds like a pretty thorough nationwide search (handled by Sterling | Martin), the Board of Directors made it official. And judging by his resume, they picked someone who knows this space inside and out.

Bratsakis comes to The League with more than three decades of executive leadership under his belt. Most recently, he ran the show as President and CEO of the MD|DC Credit Union Association, where he didn’t just keep the lights on—he actually grew the thing. We’re talking expanded member engagement, new strategic partnerships, and innovative programs designed to help credit unions adapt to whatever curveball the industry throws next.

Here’s something interesting: the guy co-founded Plexcity, which is basically a back-office collaboration platform that now serves dozens of associations, foundations, small businesses, and credit unions across the country. Think of it as the ultimate efficiency hack for organizations that would rather focus on serving members than drowning in administrative paperwork.

“John is a proven leader with an exceptional track record of advancing the credit union mission, building meaningful relationships and delivering results,” said Richard “Rick” J. Skaggs, who chairs The League’s Board of Directors. Translation: they found someone who gets it.

And Bratsakis isn’t just some guy who looks good on paper. He currently chairs the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) and has held leadership positions across multiple national credit union organizations and industry boards. He’s also spent serious time advocating for credit union interests in front of lawmakers and regulators across different states—which means he knows how to navigate the political side of things, too.

So what does the new CEO think about all this? “I am honored to join The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates and serve the credit unions, employees and communities that make this organization so impactful,” Bratsakis said. “Credit unions have never been more important to the financial wellbeing of consumers and small businesses. I look forward to working alongside our talented team, dedicated volunteer leaders, member credit unions and business partners to advance our shared mission, strengthen our influence, and create new opportunities for continued growth and success.”

Bratsakis officially takes the helm on August 3, stepping into a leadership structure that’s been recently enhanced through some governance updates. He’ll be working directly with the Board, staff, and member credit unions to push forward The League’s strategic priorities and keep delivering value across the region.

Bottom line? The League just hired someone with 35 years of experience, a track record of actual results, and the kind of industry connections that matter. Not a bad way to set up the next chapter.
