Remember the last time you used an app that looked like it was designed in 2010? Not fun, right?
Well, students learning about money management through the Bite of Reality program are getting a much better experience, thanks to a fresh redesign of the app that powers this popular financial education tool.
The RMJ Foundation just rolled out a completely revamped version of their Bite of Reality® App, and it’s exactly what you’d expect from an app in 2025: sleek, intuitive, and actually enjoyable to use. Think less “educational software” and more “app you’d willingly download.”
What’s New?
The updated app doesn’t mess with the core experience that’s made Bite of Reality a go-to resource for credit unions teaching teens about financial decision-making. Instead, it wraps that proven educational framework in a modern package that actually reflects how students interact with their phones today.
Translation: cleaner design, easier navigation, and an interface that doesn’t require a manual to figure out. The goal is simple—let students focus on learning practical money management skills without fighting the technology.
A Major Assist from Visa
Here’s where we give credit where it’s due: Visa funded this makeover. The payment giant has been a longtime champion of financial literacy, and their investment in the app redesign shows they’re serious about helping young people build real-world money skills before they’re drowning in student loans and credit card debt.
“Today’s students expect digital experiences that are intuitive, engaging, and relevant,” explained Tena Lozano, executive director of the RMJ Foundation. “This redesigned app strengthens our ability to deliver impactful financial education experiences while remaining true to the mission of Bite of Reality. We are incredibly grateful to Visa for its partnership and leadership in helping us modernize this important resource and expand our ability to reach future generations with meaningful financial education.”
Rolling Out Everywhere
The best part? This isn’t a pilot program or a limited beta test. The upgrade hit all 23 customized versions of the app used by participating credit unions across the country. Every credit union using Bite of Reality now has access to the same modern experience.
You can find the app in both the Apple App Store and Google Play, but there’s a catch—it’s designed specifically for use during in-person Bite of Reality fairs hosted by credit unions. So you can’t just download it and start playing around on your couch (though we get why you’d want to).
The Bigger Picture
This redesign isn’t just about making things look pretty. It’s part of the RMJ Foundation’s ongoing effort to keep financial education relevant and accessible. Because here’s the thing: if you want to teach young people about money in a way that actually sticks, you need to meet them where they are—and where they are is on their phones, expecting experiences that don’t feel like homework.
By continuously improving tools like Bite of Reality, the foundation is helping credit unions deliver financial education that students might actually remember when they’re making their first big purchase or deciding whether to open that third credit card.
