Amazon just rolled out what might be the most interesting employee benefit we’ve seen in a while.
The e-commerce giant is teaming up with First Tech Federal Credit Union to launch Day 1 Financial—a banking benefit that employees and their families can use forever, even after they leave Amazon.
Let’s break down what this actually means, because it’s more substantial than your typical corporate perk.
What Employees Are Getting
Day 1 Financial is essentially a lifetime membership to First Tech Federal Credit Union. Think of it as Amazon handing you the keys to a full-service bank account, then telling you to keep those keys even if you eventually move on. Your spouse and kids get access too.
The partnership builds on First Tech’s existing relationship with Amazon workers, but this time they’re aiming to knock down some of the financial roadblocks that make traditional banking frustrating—and expensive—for a lot of people.
The Actual Benefits (No Fine Print Required)
Here’s what eligible Amazon employees and their families get access to:
- Zero overdraft fees, zero monthly maintenance fees, and no minimum balance requirements on standard checking and savings accounts
- No credit history needed to open accounts—a big deal for anyone building their financial foundation
- Access to more than 85,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide, plus up to $300 yearly in ATM fee reimbursements if you use an out-of-network machine
- Standard digital banking tools like mobile apps, online banking, and direct deposit
- Credit-building programs focused on emergency savings and financial stability
- Competitive rates on credit cards, auto loans, and home loans for those who qualify
The initial rollout is scheduled for late 2026, with broader availability coming in 2027. Day 1 Financial will operate through First Tech Federal Credit Union, which is federally insured by the NCUA and operates as an independent, member-owned institution.
More Than Just a Bank Account
This announcement comes alongside Amazon’s continued investment in Brightside Financial Care, a service they launched in 2022 that gives employees free access to one-on-one financial coaching. Need help creating a budget? Managing student loans? Dealing with an emergency expense? Brightside connects you with an actual person who can help.
More than 150,000 hourly employees have used Brightside since its launch. Paired with Day 1 Financial, Amazon is essentially offering both the accounts and the guidance to help employees actually build financial security—not just earn a paycheck.
The Bigger Picture
This partnership also reflects some interesting moves happening in the credit union world. First Tech is merging with Digital Federal Credit Union (DCU) in 2026, combining two major players to create expanded capabilities. That merger is part of what makes this Amazon partnership possible at scale.
Banking fees might seem small individually, but they add up fast. Monthly maintenance fees, overdraft charges, ATM surcharges—these can quietly drain hundreds of dollars a year from people who can least afford it. By eliminating those barriers and requiring no credit history to get started, Day 1 Financial removes some real obstacles that keep people from building financial stability.
And the lifetime access element? That’s genuinely unusual. Most employer banking perks disappear the moment you leave. This one sticks around, which could make a meaningful difference for families navigating career transitions or building long-term financial health.
