From a Desk Drawer to 400,000 Members: How MSU Federal Credit Union Got Here

MSU Federal Credit Union started out of a desk drawer. This summer, it passed 400,000 members.

That’s a long road for an organization founded nearly 90 years ago, during the Great Depression, on the Michigan State University campus. The original goal was simple: give university faculty and staff access to affordable financial services for everyday needs. Today MSUFCU is one of the largest credit unions in the country, with a footprint that stretches across Michigan and into Illinois.

Celebrating All Summer Long

To mark the milestone, MSUFCU ran a summer-long campaign called Celebrate 400. It included promotions, giveaways, and special offers meant to get members using the products and services that support their financial well-being. The credit union says participation was strong. The campaign also gave it a chance to recognize the employees whose work helped get it to 400,000.

The headline prize was a Polaris Ranger 500 utility vehicle, which made stops at several MSUFCU branches around Michigan. In all, 1,326 members qualified for the sweepstakes. Cynthia Brown of Warren drew the winning entry.

Brown picked up the vehicle at MSUFCU Headquarters and kept her reaction short and sweet. “I’ve been a member since 2025 and I love it. You have great customer service. It’s amazing,” she said.

Why Growth Matters to a Co-op

MSUFCU is a member-owned financial cooperative, so it doesn’t treat size as a trophy. President and CEO April Clobes made that point directly. “Reaching 400,000 members is an important milestone, but what means the most to me is the trust that 400,000 people have placed in us,” she said. “We don’t grow just to be bigger. We grow so we can help more people improve their financial well-being, deliver excellent experiences, and create more opportunities for our communities to thrive.”

She added that each new member adds to the credit union’s capacity to invest in products, services, and partnerships that make a real difference in people’s lives.

In practice, a larger membership lets MSUFCU put money into new products and services, improve the member experience, support its employees, and strengthen community initiatives.

Still Rooted in East Lansing

Even with branches across two states, MSUFCU says it hasn’t drifted from its campus origins. It continues to back the Michigan State community through financial education programs, sponsorships, volunteer work, and partnerships that help students reach their educational goals.

What to Watch Next

With 400,000 members behind it, the next thing to watch is how MSUFCU turns that scale into results: new products and services, further investment in member experience, and deeper community partnerships. Its presence in Illinois is also worth keeping an eye on, along with how it keeps its Michigan State ties strong as it grows.
