A federal agency’s budget only reflects the public’s input if the public actually speaks up.

The NCUA has just given credit unions and other interested parties that chance. The agency released its staff draft budget for 2027–2028 today and is asking for feedback before the NCUA Board votes.

The Numbers

The proposed combined budget for 2027 comes to $325.4 million. That’s a 2.9 percent increase over the 2026 budget. It breaks down into three pieces:

  • Operating budget: $312.4 million
  • Capital budget: $7.9 million
  • Share Insurance Fund administrative budget: $5.1 million

A budget summary and detailed justifications are posted on the Budget and Supplementary Materials page of NCUA’s website. The agency has also submitted the proposal for publication in the Federal Register.

The Public Hearing

NCUA will hold a public budget hearing at its Central Office on Tuesday, November 17, starting at 10 a.m. Eastern. If you can’t make it in person, the meeting will be livestreamed on NCUA.gov.

How to Submit Comments

Comments are open until November 30. Send them on Docket # NCUA-2026-2146 through the Federal eRulemaking Portal. The agency wants specific, actionable recommendations tied to the staff draft budget, so general opinions will carry less weight than concrete suggestions.

How to Present at the Hearing

If you’d like to speak on November 17, follow these steps:

  • Email your request to BudgetHearing@ncua.gov by November 6.
  • Include the presenter’s name, title, affiliation, mailing address, email address, and telephone number.
  • Wait for the Board Secretary to notify you if you’re approved and to assign your presentation time.
  • If approved, submit a copy of your presentation by 12 noon Eastern on November 12.

What Comes Next

Watch the key dates: November 6 for presenter requests, November 12 for presentation copies, November 17 for the hearing, and November 30 for the close of comments. After that, the NCUA Board will take up the budget at its December meeting, where it will show how much the public feedback shaped the final numbers.
