Maryland’s All Peoples United Gets Federal Charter, Giving the Cameroonian Diaspora a Credit Union of Its Own

Community members gather around a table to discuss their financial goals, illustrating the cooperative purpose behind All Peoples United Federal Credit Union and its mission to serve Cameroonians and the wider African diaspora. Editorial illustration.

A credit union built around a specific community does something big banks rarely manage: it starts from the members’ needs instead of working backward to them.

The Approval

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) has granted a federal charter and Share Insurance Fund coverage to All Peoples United Federal Credit Union (APUFCU) in Columbia, Maryland. The charter took effect on October 6, 2026. APUFCU is the second federal credit union chartered this year.

NCUA Chairman John Crews said the agency is “pleased to grant a federal charter” to the new institution. He framed the decision as part of a broader push: “This new credit union reflects our ongoing commitment to expanding access to safe, affordable financial services and empowering communities through wealth building. We look forward to seeing All Peoples United Federal Credit Union provide valuable resources to its members.”

Who It Will Serve

APUFCU is a multiple common bond credit union. In plain English, that means it serves members from more than one defined group rather than a single employer or neighborhood. Its core groups are:

  • First Trust Team (F2T) Corporation, based in Columbia, Maryland
  • Community Solidarity Network (COSNET), based in Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Both organizations share a mission of supporting Cameroonians and the wider African diaspora community. That shared purpose is the glue holding the credit union together.

What’s on the Menu

The product list is short for now, which is sensible for a brand-new institution. In its first year of operations, APUFCU plans to offer savings and lending services, including:

  • Share accounts
  • Share draft accounts
  • Signature loans
  • Auto loans

Share accounts are the credit union version of savings, and share draft accounts are its checking. Start with the basics, then grow.

A charter is only the starting line, but for this community it’s a well-placed one.
