When a credit union buys a bank, customers tend to worry about two things: will anything change, and will the people they know still be there? GECU Federal Credit Union has just finished acquiring Bank of the Southwest (BOSW), and its answer is that for now, very little changes on the surface.
The bank now operates as BOSW by GECU, which gives GECU a bigger footprint in New Mexico. Together, the combined organization is a $4.9 billion credit union with more than 449,000 members nationwide. That makes it one of the largest locally owned federal credit unions in Texas and New Mexico.
What BOSW Customers Can Expect
Nobody has to relearn their banking routine just yet. BOSW by GECU will run separately from GECU until the two organizations fully merge their products and services, a step expected in June 2027. Until then, here’s how things stand:
- Branches: BOSW by GECU keeps operating its own branches.
- Online services: Digital channels stay separate from GECU’s.
- Financial services: Existing products carry on as they are until the full combination.
- Timeline: Full integration is targeted for June 2027.
The Leadership Perspective
GECU President and CEO Alex Rascón framed the deal as a growth story for the credit union movement. “This acquisition is about growing the credit union movement and expanding our people helping people philosophy,” he said.
He also stressed continuity. “BOSW customers will continue to see the same faces they know and trust while gaining access to an expanded range of financial products, services, and digital conveniences,” Rascón said. “Together, we’re building on BOSW’s longstanding commitment to this community and creating even more opportunities to help individuals, families, and businesses achieve their financial goals.”
Regulatory Green Light
The deal cleared all the necessary hurdles. The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and the New Mexico Financial Institutions Division gave their official approval in August 2026.
What to Watch Next
The real test comes over the next stretch as the two organizations work toward that June 2027 integration date. Keep an eye out for announcements about how BOSW’s products will line up with GECU’s, what happens to digital banking access, and whether the familiar faces Rascón mentioned stay put as the systems come together. Those details will show how well the promise of continuity holds up.
