Constant AI, the AI agent platform for loan operations, has launched Delinquency Shield, an agentic AI product that handles payment assistance requests from start to finish in a matter of minutes.
The goal is to resolve a delinquency before the loan crosses 60 days past due, which protects both the member and the credit union’s portfolio. The timing is pointed. Constant AI analyzed NCUA call report data and found that 1 in 4 federally insured credit unions with more than $500M in assets set aside more for loan loss reserves than they earned in the first half of 2026.*
Why Reserves Are Weighing on Credit Unions
April Clobes, President and CEO of MSU Federal Credit Union, which is implementing Delinquency Shield, put the cost plainly. “Every dollar we set aside in reserves is a dollar that can’t be invested back into serving our members,” she said. “When members are struggling, the best outcome is helping them get back on track before they fall behind. Giving people access to relief options not only supports their financial well-being, it strengthens the credit union and allows us to continue serving members through every stage of their financial journey.”
The Window Reports Can’t See
Delinquency reports look backward. By the time a loan shows up in one, the member is already behind and has already chosen which bills to pay first.
Delinquency Shield works earlier, while payment assistance can still keep a loan from rolling to 60 days past due. That window largely decides the two numbers boards watch most closely: the roll rate from 30 to 60 days past due, and the cure rate.
Consider a member whose hours were cut last month, with a car payment due Friday. Each week she waits, the money that could have covered it goes to rent and groceries, and the hole gets deeper. In the coming weeks she’ll probably get calls, texts, and emails asking her to pay, or to name a date when she will. She can’t. What she needs is a way to say “I’m short for the next two months” and get an answer that fits.
Where the Current Process Stalls
Most credit unions already offer a range of payment assistance programs that give struggling members a real chance to avoid further delinquency. The trouble is delivery. When a human collector talks to a member who can’t pay, matching them to the right program takes time. Each request is handled manually and may pass through layers of approval, so it can sit in a back-office queue for days or weeks while the member slips further behind.
Standard collections workflows don’t fill the gap. Reminders and payment links work well for members who simply forgot. But those workflows are built to ask for payments and promises, not to offer relief to people who can’t pay.
How Nia Handles a Request
Delinquency Shield is run by Nia, Constant AI’s payment assistance agent. In a single conversation, she:
- Asks the member what happened, how long it’s likely to last, and what they can afford.
- Reviews the member’s full account, including all of their debt with the credit union. Reason and duration are what separate one kind of hardship from another.
- Weighs all of that against the credit union’s own policy to select the program that fits.
- Walks the member through the terms, gets their agreement, and posts the change to the core.
The member gets an answer in the same conversation. There’s no callback, no queue, and no rekeying by staff. Every offer, outcome, and core posting is logged with a full audit trail, and collectors keep the cases that need a human.
“A member who can’t pay doesn’t need another reminder. They need an answer that fits their situation, preferably before the loan reaches day 60,” said Catherine York Powers, President and CEO of Constant AI. “Nia gives every member the options your best collector would offer, in the first conversation, under your own policy.”
Fitting Into Existing Systems
Credit unions don’t have to change what they already run. Delinquency Shield works with the platforms they already use. A dashboard shows every request and its outcome, along with the loan value protected and the charge-offs avoided.
What to Watch Next
The proof will be in the numbers boards already track. Watch whether early adopters like MSU Federal Credit Union report movement in their 30-to-60-day roll rates and cure rates, and whether provision expenses ease relative to earnings as more institutions try this approach.
