Financial Plus, Monroe Community Plan $2 Billion Powerhouse Merger

Financial Plus CU Monroe CU Merger

When two member-owned credit unions join forces, the real test is whether the neighborhood feel survives the math.

Financial Plus Credit Union and Monroe Community Credit Union have announced their intent to merge. If regulators and members sign off, the result would be a Michigan credit union with more than $2 billion in assets. Both institutions have deep local roots, and both say they want to keep the people-first approach they’ve built over the decades.

A Hometown Connection

Monroe Community Credit Union’s story starts in 1953. It has grown steadily since then, and it has stayed focused on local service and community impact.

For Financial Plus President & CEO Brad Bergmooser, this deal is personal. He grew up in Monroe.

“Monroe isn’t just another community on a map for me. It’s home,” Bergmooser said. “It’s where I grew up, where my lifelong friendships were formed, and where the values that guide me today first took shape. That makes this partnership especially meaningful. Our goal isn’t to change what makes Monroe special. It’s to build on the strong foundation already in place, preserve the hometown relationships members value, and provide additional products, technology, and resources that will help members and the community thrive for years to come.”

What Each Side Brings

  • Monroe Community CU: a longstanding reputation for community involvement and local service.
  • Financial Plus CU: broader product offerings, a statewide branch network, and stronger digital banking.

Monroe CEO Kristine Brenner says the two share more than a business case. “There is a strong alignment between our organizations, from our shared values and commitment to our employees to the way we serve our members and support our communities,” she said.

She also pointed to a notable commitment: all employees from both organizations will be retained. “We are excited about what this partnership means for the future, including the opportunity to bring our teams together and retain all employees from both organizations,” Brenner said. “By combining our strengths, we believe we can create an even stronger credit union, provide greater value and expand opportunities for our members, and make an even greater impact in our communities.”

What Happens Next

Nothing changes yet. The merger still needs regulatory and member approval. Details on the approval process and timeline will go out to members in the coming months. The two organizations say the combination should help them serve members, support employees, and invest in the communities they call home.
