Firefighters First Credit Union teamed up with IgniteFI to host a customized Firecracker Focus workshop in Madison, WI, pulling roughly 70 credit union leaders into a hands-on session on fintech innovation, collaboration, and growth.
Less Trade Show, More Test Kitchen
Most fintech showcases work like a buffet line: you walk past the options, nibble a few, and leave with a vague memory of the shrimp. Firecracker Focus works more like a test kitchen. Leaders don’t just sample what’s on offer. They roll up their sleeves and figure out what belongs on their own menu.
Here’s how it came together. IgniteFI worked with the credit union to pin down its strategic priorities, then pre-screened fintech companies against them. Four made the cut and delivered tailored presentations, giving leadership a look at the solutions and how they might apply in real life.
Then came the work. Participants split into facilitated, cross-functional breakout sessions to:
- Assess current-state challenges
- Envision future-state opportunities
- Evaluate the impact on the organization
- Identify possible next steps
Leaders Who Actually Wanted to Be There
Participation stood out. In the breakouts, leaders traded perspectives, kicked around practical uses for emerging technology, and offered ideas for tackling organizational challenges. The format also tied departments closer together, since people who don’t always share a table got to share one.
“What stood out most was how engaged our team was throughout the entire experience,” said Dixie Abramian, President/CEO of Firefighters First Credit Union. “Our leaders really enjoyed being part of the process rather than simply listening to presentations. The opportunity to share ideas, collaborate with colleagues, and help shape potential solutions made the workshop both energizing and valuable.”
From Cool Tech to Concrete Plans
The workshop didn’t stop at what the technology can do. Through facilitated strategic exercises, participants looked for opportunities across departments, discussed possible improvements to operations and the member experience, and mapped out practical steps for moving promising ideas forward.
“Firecracker Focus is designed to help credit unions move beyond simply discovering new technology and start connecting innovation to meaningful business outcomes,” said Julie J. Esser, Founder and CEO of IgniteFI. “What makes the experience especially powerful is the opportunity for credit union leadership to contribute their perspectives and collaborate across the organization. When people are engaged in the process, innovation becomes something they help shape rather than something that simply happens around them.”
Jeffrey Staw, Chief Information & Innovation Officer at Firefighters First, saw the same thing from the inside. “Firecracker Focus gave our team an opportunity to think differently about innovation and how it connects to our strategic priorities,” he said. “The enthusiasm and participation from our leadership team reinforced the importance of involving people across the organization in these conversations. It created a sense of ownership and excitement around the opportunities ahead.”
What to Watch Next
Firecracker Focus comes as a one-time workshop or as an ongoing quarterly engagement, so credit unions can tackle specific challenges, vet relevant fintech solutions, and keep momentum going. For Firefighters First, the thing to watch is which of the ideas from these sessions turn into real initiatives, and whether the cross-department energy carries into the months ahead.
