A leadership change this far in advance is the best kind: no scramble, no surprises, just a plan that was clearly written well before anyone needed it.

Scott Zahnle, President and CEO of Greater Iowa Credit Union, will retire on January 29, 2027, closing out 15 years at the helm. He joined the credit union in 2012. Since then, he has helped it grow and get stronger while keeping intact the member-first culture that defines it.

“It has been an honor to lead such an outstanding organization with exceptional employees and a supportive Board of Directors,” Zahnle said. “I will miss working alongside them each day, but I am proud of what we’ve accomplished together and excited about the future of Greater Iowa Credit Union.”

The Handoff at a Glance

  • Who’s leaving: Scott Zahnle, President and CEO since 2012
  • Who’s stepping in: Julie Willse, currently Chief Operations Officer
  • When: Willse takes over upon Zahnle’s retirement on January 29, 2027
  • How it was decided: A deliberate succession-planning process led by the Board of Directors

A Plan, Not a Scramble

The Board built the process to keep leadership steady and the transition smooth for both members and employees. Its pick: Willse, who has been a key part of the senior leadership team. Her résumé includes operational leadership, strategic planning, and organizational growth.

Dr. Michael Crum, Chair of the Board, framed the move as a core duty. “One of the Board’s most important responsibilities is ensuring strong leadership for the future of the credit union,” he said. “This transition reflects years of planning and preparation. We are grateful for Scott’s years of service and the strong foundation he has helped build.”

Willse, for her part, sounded ready to keep building. “I am honored by the opportunity to serve as Greater Iowa Credit Union’s next President and CEO,” she said. “We have an outstanding team, a dedicated Board of Directors, and a strong foundation built through years of thoughtful leadership. I look forward to building on that foundation and continuing our commitment to helping members achieve greater financial success.”

What Happens Between Now and Then

Zahnle and Willse have worked side by side for years, and they’ll keep collaborating through the transition so the handoff stays seamless. Meanwhile, the credit union’s priorities haven’t budged: serving members well, supporting its employees, and helping members achieve greater financial success.

For members, the change at the top will be one you read about long before you ever feel it.
