Forget dusty textbooks and boring lectures about compound interest. Thanks to a partnership between Space Coast Credit Union and Junior Achievement of South Florida, eighth graders are getting a crash course in adulting—complete with career exploration, budget management, and financial literacy skills—all through an immersive, high-tech simulation that’s actually fun.
On May 28, SCCU volunteers showed up at JA Career Discovery Park, a hands-on facility where middle schoolers get to test-drive different careers and make real-world money decisions without the real-world consequences of accidentally spending their rent money on concert tickets.
This collaboration is part of SCCU’s Partners in Purpose program, which focuses on education and financial literacy. The credit union already put its money where its mouth is by donating $25,000 to Junior Achievement of South Florida to support financial education and youth empowerment programs throughout the community.
“Today’s students need more than information, they need experiences that help them see what’s possible for their future,” said Laurie Sallarulo, President & CEO of Junior Achievement of South Florida. “By supporting JA Career Discovery Park and volunteering alongside our students, Space Coast Credit Union is helping young people explore careers, practice making real-world financial decisions, develop workplace skills and build the confidence to pursue their goals.”
So what exactly happens at JA Career Discovery Park? Think of it as a real-world simulator—industry leaders create interactive storefronts and simulations that let students experience different careers firsthand. It’s hands-on learning that covers work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy, giving these eighth graders a serious head start on skills most of us had to learn the hard way.
“Having the opportunity to share our knowledge and help students explore real career paths reinforces the purpose behind our program,” said Joelle Hahn, SVP of Marketing at Space Coast Credit Union and leader of the Partners in Purpose program. “We’re proud to volunteer with Junior Achievement of South Florida and connect with students in meaningful ways that help inspire confidence as they explore future careers.”
Junior Achievement of South Florida is one of several nonprofit partners SCCU works with through Partners in Purpose, a program that connects volunteerism, corporate giving, and nonprofit partnerships to create meaningful community impact. Beyond financial literacy, SCCU also supports initiatives focused on military and first responders and coastline protection across the communities they serve.
The bottom line? SCCU is investing in the next generation by giving students practical skills they’ll actually use—and making learning about money management a whole lot more engaging than staring at a spreadsheet.
