Kino School’s New Music Room Is Almost Ready, Thanks to a $90,000 Gift from TFCU

Kino Music School Update

A school that serves kids who learn differently just turned a covered porch into a soundproof music room, and that’s worth celebrating.

Kino School‘s new music classroom is in the home stretch. Drywall, doors, windows, insulation, and wiring are all in place, thanks to a $90,000 gift from Tucson Federal Credit Union (TFCU). The credit union presented the donation in December 2025 to cover the conversion of a 336-square-foot covered porch into a fully enclosed, climate-controlled, sound-insulated space. Think of it as the school’s own little recording studio, minus the mixing board. The project has already passed multiple inspections, and recent photos show a room that looks like a classroom.

What’s Left Before Students Move In

The to-do list is short, but a couple of items depend on other people’s timelines:

  • HVAC: the system still needs air balancing.
  • Fire suppression: the fire marshal is reviewing an engineered solution. School leaders expect that to take a couple of months.
  • Exterior paint: it waits until the new stucco has fully cured.

About Kino School

Kino School opened in 1976 as a K–12 nonprofit for students who learn differently. Instruction is individualized and project-based, with an 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio. The curriculum leans on STEAM, the arts, and emotional intelligence instead of standardized testing.

The student body makes the gift count for more. Nearly 90% of Kino families receive financial assistance, and over a third of students have special needs. Both figures sit well above state averages.

Why TFCU Got Involved

TFCU was founded by teachers, and education remains a core part of its mission. The gift reflects its ongoing commitment to Southern Arizona’s schools and its belief that students of every learning style deserve a shot at success.
