NMU’s New Financial Commons Is Like a Gym Membership for Your Wallet (And It’s Actually Free)

Northern Michigan University Launches On-Campus Financial Commons in Partnership with Collegiate and AlumniFi

Northern Michigan University just opened something that might actually get students more excited than free pizza during finals week: a dedicated financial wellness hub that treats money management like the essential life skill it is.

The Collegiate + AlumniFi Financial Commons officially opened its doors in the Northern Center, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that brought together university leadership, alumni, and community partners. Think of it as a one-stop shop where Wildcats can learn to adult financially—without the intimidating bank vibes or the urge to immediately back out the door.

What’s Actually Inside This Thing?

Powered by MSU Federal Credit Union and backed by federal insurance through the NCUA, this isn’t your typical stuffy bank branch. The Financial Commons blends high-tech digital tools with actual humans who can help you figure out why your checking account keeps crying for help every month.

The space features video tellers (yes, like FaceTime but for banking), a tech bar where you can manage your accounts, and private offices for those “I really need to talk about my student loans” moments. Plus, NMU is rolling out three fee-free ATMs across campus and giving students access to over 30,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide—because nobody should pay $3.50 to access their own money.

“We are committed to helping students, faculty, and staff navigate life’s most important financial decisions with trusted guidance and personalized support,” said April Clobes, President and CEO of Collegiate, AlumniFi, and MSUFCU. “The Collegiate + AlumniFi Financial Commons at Northern Michigan University will provide a welcoming space where students can build strong financial foundations, and alumni can access the resources and tools they need to achieve their goals while staying connected to their alma mater.”

Two Platforms, Two Life Stages

The Financial Commons offers different tools depending on where you are in life:

Collegiate Student Banking is built for the college years—mobile-first digital checking and savings accounts with zero monthly fees. You’ll get real-time spending insights (hello, awareness of that 2 a.m. food delivery habit), customizable savings goals, and financial education that doesn’t require a dictionary to understand.

AlumniFi is designed for graduating seniors, alumni, faculty, staff, and the broader university community navigating post-college reality. It offers high-yield savings accounts, automation tools to knock out student loans faster, debt repayment rewards (yes, rewards for paying off debt—it’s as cool as it sounds), and financial wellness tools like FinLife™.

Learning That Doesn’t Feel Like Homework

The Financial Commons isn’t just about accounts and ATMs. It’s also an education hub offering both virtual and in-person workshops on the financial stuff that actually matters: budgeting without feeling broke, using credit responsibly, buying your first home, and keeping your accounts secure from scammers who are way too creative for their own good.

“At NMU, we are dedicated to providing our students with comprehensive resources that prepare them for long-term success both inside and outside the classroom,” said Chris Olsen, President of NMU. “This partnership with Collegiate and AlumniFi introduces a valuable asset to our campus. The Financial Commons equips our students with essential money management tools for their college years and gives our alumni a lasting connection to the university community.”
