Here’s the thing about AI training programs: most of them are about as useful as a chocolate teapot. You sit through presentations about “the future of innovation” and “transformative potential,” nod politely, and leave with zero idea what to actually do on Monday morning.
The Cooperative Credit Union Association decided to skip that nonsense entirely.
Through its Cooperative Education division, the CCUA just rolled out the AI Readiness Curriculum—a training program built specifically for credit unions that’s less “isn’t AI amazing?” and more “here’s exactly how to put it to work.” They partnered with Stickball, a global AI education firm, to create something that treats participants like professionals who need practical skills, not wide-eyed students who need to be convinced AI exists.
Learning That Builds Toward Something
What separates this program from your standard intro course? It’s structured as a genuine learning journey with a clear destination. You’re not just gaining “AI awareness”—you’re building organizational competency that translates into real capabilities.
The curriculum walks participants from understanding what AI actually is, all the way through to leading responsible implementation at their credit union. Think of it as climbing a ladder where each rung actually supports your weight, rather than attending four disconnected webinars that all cover the same surface-level material.
Four Modules That Build on Each Other
The program breaks down into four progressive chunks:
- Understand: The fundamentals—what AI is, how to talk about it, how it analyzes data, and where it’s already being used in practical ways.
- Navigate: A six-step method for evaluating real business challenges and figuring out if (and how) AI can help solve them.
- Accelerate: The hands-on stuff—spotting opportunities, working with AI agents, using actual tools and integrations, and creating measurable value for your organization.
- Lead: Building governance frameworks and responsible AI practices tailored to your specific credit union, complete with customized content for your organization.
Premium program participants also get access to AI-powered tools designed to help analyze opportunities, prioritize what to tackle first, and support problem-solving efforts. Basically, the training wheels come with an actual bike.
Why This Matters
“Artificial intelligence is no longer a future consideration—it is becoming an essential business capability,” said Aimee Morin, Vice President of Education & Operations at the CCUA. “Supporting our member credit unions with timely, practical education is at the heart of what we do at CCUA. This curriculum gives credit union professionals the knowledge and confidence to responsibly apply AI in their organizations, and our partnership with Stickball allowed us to build a program tailored specifically to the needs of the industry.”
Translation: AI isn’t coming. It’s here. And credit unions need people who can actually work with it, not just attend panels about it.
Early Reviews Are Promising
The program has already gone through its paces with early participants, and the feedback suggests they’re onto something.
“The program is a progressive learning journey designed specifically for credit union staff, building practical AI skills from the fundamentals to advanced applications,” said Matthew J. Haines, Chief Operating Officer at Bellwether Community Credit Union. “The goal is to create real AI competence across the organization, not just awareness.”
That last bit is key. Awareness is cheap. Competence is what actually moves the needle.
How to Get Started
The AI Readiness Curriculum is available now through Cooperative Education in two flavors. The Foundation program includes the first three modules and is open to all users. The Premium offering adds that fourth leadership module, plus customized organizational training and exclusive access to those AI tools we mentioned earlier.
Whether your credit union is just starting to explore AI or you’re ready to build a full implementation strategy, the program meets you where you are. No fluff, no hype—just practical education designed for the people who need to put this technology to work.
