USALLIANCE Financial Promotes from Within, Taps Brett Wheeler as New CEO

When you’ve got the right person already in the building, why look elsewhere? That’s exactly what USALLIANCE Financial decided when they named Brett Wheeler as their new President and CEO.

Wheeler isn’t some outside hire parachuting in with a fresh MBA and a stack of management books. He’s been in the trenches at USALLIANCE for nine years, most recently as CFO, and before that spent nearly a decade at NCUA—that’s the federal agency that keeps credit unions in check. In other words, the guy knows his stuff.

“Brett Wheeler is the right leader for this moment and for the many years ahead,” said Carla Palma, USALLIANCE Board Chair. Translation: They found their person, and they’re betting big on him to steer the ship into its seventh decade of operation.

A Track Record That Speaks Volumes

Wheeler’s resume at USALLIANCE reads like a greatest hits album. During his time as CFO, he helped grow the credit union to more than $3.4 billion in assets. Not too shabby. He’s also been instrumental in pushing forward their “digital-first, branch-enhanced” strategy—fancy speak for “we’ll meet you where you are, whether that’s on your phone at 2 AM or face-to-face at a branch.”

The numbers back up the hype: membership growth, better satisfaction scores, and a balance sheet that’s looking pretty healthy. It’s the kind of performance that makes a board say, “Yeah, let’s give this person the keys.”

Passing the Torch

Wheeler takes over from Harry Zhu, who’s leaving to pursue other opportunities. The board made sure to thank Zhu for his contributions before rolling out the welcome mat for Wheeler’s official promotion. Wheeler had already served as Interim CEO, so this feels less like a transition and more like making official what everyone already knew was coming.

“I am humbled and honored to be selected to lead our credit union into its seventh decade,” Wheeler said. He’s inheriting an institution that started back in 1966 when IBM employees decided to pool their resources—and has since expanded to serve members across all fifty states.

What’s Next?

Wheeler’s vision centers on USALLIANCE’s core mission: empowering members’ financial well-being so they can chase their dreams. It’s straightforward stuff, but in an industry that sometimes drowns in jargon, straightforward is refreshing.

The credit union is gearing up to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year, and Wheeler seems committed to honoring that history while keeping his eyes firmly on the future. With his deep knowledge of both the organization and the broader credit union landscape, he’s positioned to keep USALLIANCE growing without losing sight of what got them here in the first place.

Sometimes the best hire is the one who’s been proving themselves all along. For USALLIANCE, that person is Brett Wheeler—and his first day in the big office is already behind him.
