Wyoming’s Western Vista Credit Union Joins the DCUC Family

The Defense Credit Union Council just got a little bigger—and a little more Wyoming-flavored. Western Vista Credit Union, calling Cheyenne home, has officially joined DCUC’s growing membership roster.

Here’s a quick history lesson that won’t put you to sleep: Back in 1940, this credit union started life as Wytel Federal Credit Union. Picture it—the same year McDonald’s opened its first restaurant, and “Casablanca” was still two years away from theaters. Western Vista launched with a focused mission: serving Mountain Bell employees. Fast forward eight decades, and they’ve transformed from those modest roots into a financial powerhouse serving over 17,000 members across the country.

The numbers tell an impressive story. Western Vista manages roughly $281 million in assets and operates branches in both Cheyenne and Casper. They’re not just keeping the lights on, either—they offer everything from consumer banking to business services to mortgage solutions. The credit union has doubled down on blending cutting-edge technology with that personal touch members actually care about.

“Joining the Defense Credit Union Council reflects our ongoing commitment to serving our members with excellence while supporting the broader credit union movement,” explains Steven Leafgreen, President/CEO of Western Vista CU. “We’re proud to join an organization that champions advocacy, collaboration, and the unique mission of credit unions serving military members, veterans, and their families.”

Anthony Hernandez, DCUC’s President/CEO and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, rolled out the welcome mat: “We are pleased to welcome Western Vista CU to the DCUC membership. For more than 85 years, Western Vista has demonstrated a strong commitment to its members and communities. We look forward to supporting their continued success through advocacy, education, and opportunities to collaborate with credit union leaders dedicated to strengthening financial well-being and serving those who serve our nation.”

It’s a natural fit. Western Vista brings over 85 years of member-focused experience to an organization that’s all about supporting credit unions dedicated to military members, veterans, and their families. That’s the kind of partnership that makes sense on paper and in practice.
