Free Document Shredding Events Coming to Michigan This Summer (Yes, Really Free)

Got a filing cabinet stuffed with old bank statements from 2015? Tax returns from when flip phones were still a thing? Honor Credit Union has your back—and your identity’s safety in mind.

The credit union is rolling out its 2026 Free Community Shred Days across western and northern Michigan, giving residents a safe way to dump those dusty documents while doing something good for the planet. Think of it as spring cleaning meets identity theft prevention meets environmental responsibility. A trifecta of adulting, if you will.

How It Works

Honor has teamed up with Data Guardian and Country Mile Document Destruction—the pros who actually know how to make sure your social security number doesn’t end up in the wrong hands. The events run as drive-thru services, so you don’t even need to leave your car. Just pull up, hand over your boxes, and Honor’s team takes care of the rest.

Here’s the deal: each household can bring up to 10 boxes or bags per event. That’s plenty of space for those outdated financial statements, old tax records, and whatever other confidential paperwork has been collecting dust in your basement.

A Dozen Years and Counting

This isn’t Honor’s first rodeo. The Free Community Shred Days have been running for 12 years now, becoming a genuine community tradition. It’s about more than just shredding paper—it’s about giving people practical tools to protect themselves and reduce waste at the same time.

“We want to do all we can to protect our members,” said Scott McFarland, Honor Credit Union’s CEO. “Offering free Shred Days is one of the ways we work in our communities to help protect sensitive information. Another way is through services like e-statements and online banking, it reflects our ongoing commitment to care for our members and the communities we serve.”

One Special Stop Gets the Full Show

Quick note: most locations will collect your documents and have them securely destroyed off-site. But if you’re near Gwinn, you’re in for a treat. That location will have on-site shredding courtesy of Country Mile Document Destruction, so you can actually watch your old electric bills meet their maker.
