Great Lakes Credit Union Invests in Duome to Help Chicago-Area Families Afford a Home

A genuine lifestyle portrait of a local working family celebrating the milestone of homeownership.

A steady paycheck and a solid credit score used to be the ticket to homeownership.

In the Chicago area, that’s no longer a safe bet. Many households can handle a monthly payment but can’t qualify for the mortgage that today’s prices demand. Great Lakes Credit Union (GLCU) is now backing a fix for that problem.

What Happened

GLCU, a not-for-profit financial cooperative, has made a capital investment in Duome through its holding company, GLCU Holdings. Duome is a credit union service organization (CUSO), meaning a company owned by credit unions to provide services they can offer their members. It’s a co-investment homeownership company that helps mortgage-ready households buy in markets where prices have outrun incomes.

The investment is the first step toward bringing Duome to members across the greater Chicago region. It also reflects a broader trend: more credit unions are looking for new ways to respond to the housing affordability crisis.

Why It Matters

The numbers explain the urgency. The median home price in the Chicago metro hit $401,000 this summer, up nearly 7% in a year. Illinois is also dealing with limited inventory, which keeps pushing the gap between what people earn and what homes cost wider. Credit unions were built to serve working people, and they’re watching that gap hit the educators, public servants, and families who make up their membership.

Duome’s approach is to co-invest in a home alongside a qualified buyer. Its investment shrinks the mortgage to a size the household’s income can comfortably support. The buyer lives in the home, owns it, and builds equity from day one. Because Duome is a CUSO, the model is designed to fit inside the credit union system: partner credit unions originate the mortgage and keep the member relationship.

A Credit Union With Deep Roots

GLCU was founded in 1938 to serve civil servants at Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago, a community with no financial institution of its own. Nearly ninety years later, it still focuses on members that mainstream finance has overlooked.

Headquartered in Bannockburn, Illinois, GLCU holds more than $1.4 billion in assets and serves more than 105,000 members in Chicago and surrounding areas. Its GLCU Foundation for Financial Empowerment offers homebuyer counseling and financial education.

“GLCU has spent nearly ninety years expanding access to financial services for people the mainstream system has overlooked,” said Michael Abraham, President and CEO of GLCU Holdings. “The GLCU Foundation has been doing the hard work of providing homebuyer counseling and financial education for years, and we know firsthand how many members can make a monthly payment but can’t qualify for the mortgage today’s prices require. Duome bridges that gap. Bringing it to Chicagoland is the next step in the work we are already doing.”

What Comes Next

Duome and GLCU will now prepare the program for GLCU members. That work includes member education, lending coordination, and integration with Duome’s homeowner platform.

“With each addition to our ownership, Duome becomes something bigger than a product,” said Duome Co-founder Miriam Ackerman. “GLCU’s HUD-certified financial counselors are already doing the work of getting families mortgage-ready, and GLCU’s leadership recognized Duome as a piece that can solve the math problem. GLCU and Duome’s partnership is helping a new ecosystem take shape.”

If you’re a Chicago-area renter or buyer who feels priced out despite good income and credit, start with your credit union. Ask about homebuyer counseling and whether it offers or plans to offer co-investment options. If you’re a GLCU member, that conversation is a smart place to begin as the program takes shape.
