Here’s something you probably didn’t know: a single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water every day. That’s basically a tiny, shelled water treatment plant doing its thing 24/7. And on June 16, volunteers from Space Coast Credit Union (SCCU) got their hands dirty—literally—helping these little environmental heroes do their job in the Indian River Lagoon.
Through SCCU’s Partners in Purpose program, the credit union teamed up with the East Coast Zoological Foundation (EZCF) for a volunteer day that was all about oyster reef restoration. Think of it as habitat rehab, but for shellfish. The crew spent the day maintaining existing oyster beds, leveling shell beds, and strategically moving coquina rocks to reinforce developing reef structures.
Why does this matter? The Indian River Lagoon needs all the help it can get. These oyster reefs aren’t just homes for marine life—they’re natural water filters, shoreline protectors, and ecosystem superheroes rolled into one crusty package.
And SCCU isn’t just showing up with gloves and good intentions. The credit union previously dropped $35,000 to support EZCF’s Restore Our Shores initiative, which tackles coastal restoration, wildlife protection, and habitat conservation across Florida. That’s putting your money where your oyster beds are.
“At SCCU, supporting our communities also means doing what we can to preserve our coastlines and waterways—and we take that responsibility seriously,” said Joelle Hahn, SVP of Marketing at Space Coast Credit Union and the person steering the Partners in Purpose ship. “Partnering with the East Coast Zoological Foundation helps us turn that commitment into real, lasting impact.”
The East Coast Zoological Foundation is one of several nonprofit partners in SCCU’s Partners in Purpose program, which weaves together volunteerism, corporate giving, and strategic partnerships to create meaningful change in the community. It’s the kind of initiative that proves financial institutions can do more than just manage money—they can help manage ecosystems too.
