People’s Credit Union Gives $500 to Middletown’s Comfort Dog on Patrol

A rough day in Middletown doesn’t always call for a badge and a notepad.

Sometimes it calls for a dog who is very good at sitting next to you and asking nothing in return.

That’s the job of Luke, the Middletown Police Department’s K-9 Comfort and Compassion Dog. He works alongside Officer David Theberge in the department’s community policing unit, and he just got a boost: People’s Credit Union donated $500 to help fund Luke’s programming.

Small Team, Big Reach

The money is modest, but the team it backs gets a lot of mileage out of it. Courtney Hunter, Head of Community Development for People’s, says she has watched the pair at work and seen what they do for people.

“Luke and Officer Theberge help to build meaningful relationships with the community,” Hunter said. “In addition to boosting community morale, I have seen first-hand the positive effects this small but mighty team provides by giving support to those in need.”

She also had praise for the human half of the duo. According to Hunter, Officer Theberge is easy to reach and welcomes suggestions for new ways to give back, the kind of contributions that leave a lasting impression on Aquidneck Island.

What It Means for Neighbors

If you live on Aquidneck Island, this is the kind of local partnership that shows up in your daily life, even if you never see a check change hands. A comfort dog gives people an easier way to approach officers, and a friendly tail-wag can do what a flyer never will.

Have an idea for a community event or program? Hunter says Officer Theberge is open to hearing it. Next time you spot Luke around town, that’s your cue to say hello.
