Three High Schoolers Just Landed the Coolest Part-Time Gig: Running Actual Bank Branches at Their Schools

John Paul Rodgers Brendan Parks Skyler Starring

Here’s something you don’t see on the typical high school job roster: actual banking positions where students get to manage real money and serve their classmates.

Marshall Community Credit Union (MCCU) just brought on three student tellers who’ll be doing exactly that.

Meet Brendan Parks, John Paul Rodgers, and Skyler Starring—the newest members of MCCU’s CU in School team for the 2026-27 school year. Brendan and John Paul go to Marshall High School, while Skyler attends Battle Creek Central High School. And unlike most summer jobs that involve flipping burgers or lifeguarding (both perfectly respectable, by the way), these three spent their break learning the ins and outs of credit union operations at their local MCCU branches.

Now they’re taking everything they learned and bringing it back to campus, where they’ll run student-operated branches right at their own schools. Think of it as hands-on financial education with actual stakes—real transactions, real member service, real responsibility.

More Than Just a Paycheck

The gig doesn’t end when the school bell rings, either. Throughout the year, Brendan, John Paul, and Skyler can continue working at their local MCCU branches when their schedules allow. They’ll also participate in an independent study program led by Laura Santos, MCCU’s Community & Youth Engagement Manager, diving deeper into personal finance, financial responsibility, and what a career in the credit union world actually looks like.

“Our Student Teller program is designed to give students more than just a job,” Santos explained. “They’re stepping into a real-world environment where they can practice managing money, serving others, communicating professionally and making financial decisions. We’re excited to see Brendan, John Paul, and Skyler take what they’ve learned through their training and share it with their classmates and school communities.”

Banking During Lunch Period

Both school branches are officially up and running. Battle Creek Central celebrated its grand opening on September 10, with Marshall High School following suit on September 11. Students and staff at both schools can now handle their banking needs during designated lunch periods throughout the school year—because apparently some people are way more productive during lunch than others.

MCCU has been partnering with Marshall Public Schools since 2001, making financial education accessible through these in-school branches. The expansion to Battle Creek Central High School in 2025 marks a significant milestone, bringing this student-run banking model to a whole new community of learners.

The bottom line? These three students are getting real-world experience that’ll look pretty impressive on college applications—and learning skills that’ll actually matter long after graduation day.
