Golden 1 Credit Union just announced they're partnering with Sacramento State for a four-year, million-dollar commitment that's all about making sure students can actually focus on, you know, being students. The partnership zeroes in on something crucial that often gets overlooked in higher education conversations—basic needs. We're talking food security, stable housing, and the kind of financial literacy that doesn't come from a three-hour lecture on compound interest. More Than Just a Check Golden 1's investment isn't going to some abstract initiative that looks good in a press release. The money will directly support Sacramento State's Division of Student Affairs, funding everything from orientation and move-in events to the Basic Needs Resource Center—a lifeline for students who are trying to balance tuition payments with, say, eating regularly. "Golden 1 and Sacramento State share a deep commitment to student success and well-being," said Erica Taylor, senior vice president of community impact and public relations at Golden 1. "By expanding access to financial education, critical resources, and basic needs support, we're helping students focus on what matters most – succeeding academically and preparing for their future." Translation? They're working to remove the barriers that make it nearly impossible for some students to concentrate in class when they're worried about where their next meal is coming from or whether they'll have a place to sleep. The Numbers Tell the Story Sacramento State serves more than 31,000 students annually, and here's a stat that should make everyone sit up straight: 42% of students qualify for CalFresh assistance. That's not a typo. Nearly half of the student body is eligible for food stamps. The Basic Needs Resource Center sees this reality up close, averaging more than 5,000 visits every single month. That's sustained, ongoing demand for fundamental support that no student should have to worry about while trying to earn a degree. Getting Students Connected from Day One One of the smartest parts of this partnership? It starts early. Golden 1 will be a Presenting Sponsor for orientation sessions in June and July, plus a Proud Partner for the Arrive to the Hive events in August. That means they'll connect with roughly 9,000 incoming first-year students and 4,000 transfer students right as they're starting their Sacramento State journey. First-year students and transfers will get plugged into financial education resources and campus support services before they've even unpacked their dorm rooms. The goal is simple: help students understand what's available to them so they actually use these resources when they need them. "Sacramento State values partners like Golden 1 that recognize financial health as a critical part of student well-being and academic success," said Aniesha Mitchell, J.D., vice president for Student Affairs. "Through this collaboration, we're able to enhance our orientation and welcome programs and ensure students have access to resources they need to succeed from the start." Building on Past Support This isn't Golden 1's first rodeo with Sacramento State. Earlier in 2025, they showed up with a moving truck—literally a moving truck—packed with essential supplies for the Basic Needs Resource Center. They followed that up with another shipment later in the fall, establishing what's now becoming a sustained partnership. The credit union has also been supporting food and basic needs programs across California State University campuses for the past four years through Giving Tuesday initiatives. This new four-year, $1 million commitment represents a significant expansion of that work. Part of a Bigger Picture Beyond Sacramento State, Golden 1 has been making waves across California through financial education programs, scholarships, grants, disaster relief, and employee volunteer efforts. Since launching their scholarship program in 2013, they've awarded nearly $5 million to close to 600 California students—including Sacramento State alumni who've come full circle. The bottom line? This partnership recognizes something fundamental: you can't expect students to succeed academically if they're struggling with basic survival. By investing in both immediate needs and long-term financial education, Golden 1 and Sacramento State are creating a support system that gives students a real shot at making it through college and thriving once they get there.
